WordPress: New features for GDPR

The GDPR on the WordPress platform

The new version of WordPress has just been released and contains smaller corrections related to maintenance needs, but has been improved in particular to introduce features dedicated to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), or the new legislation on the treatment of personal data. The new provisions concerning the need to obtain the consent of users for the permanence of data, users who log out will have a new option with which to decide whether or not information such as name, email address and website should be saved in the browser Web through cookies.

Data management aspects

For aspects of data management, website owners now have the option to delete information that is relevant to a specific user, this operation also implies data stored via plugins. There are also news regarding the export of data, the managers of Internet sites can now export an archive in the format ZIP containing a user’s personal data, even in this case the procedure extends only to information collected by the extensions installed. A new method for confirming requests for personal data is available. We are talking about an email based system that can be used both for deletion instances and for those of data export. In this way the operation is guaranteed for both registered users and commentators.

The Privacy Policy

A tool specifically dedicated to the privacy policy has been inserted, the contents will be displayed in the login and registration pages. The link to the privacy policy page must be inserted manually in all pages of the website, so the footer will in most cases be the best place to host the link. It’s very interesting that you’ll get information about how the CMS and the plugins handle the data, tips that can be copied and pasted to complete your privacy policy. Please note that these will also include details about the action taken by the extensions on the data. The GDPR involves all projects that collect, store and process data about citizens residing in the EU area, regardless of where an activity has its registered office.
